Not sure whether to book?

Should you book a women’s health assessment?

You do not have to accept persistent pelvic discomfort or bladder weakness as permanent. Seeking support early helps you regain comfort and daily control much faster. Consider booking an assessment if:

  • You experience unexpected leaks when coughing, laughing, jumping or exercising.
  • You notice a frequent feeling of heaviness or pressure in your lower pelvic area.
  • Sharp lower back, hip or tailbone pain is making pregnancy or daily activities difficult.
  • You are recovering from birth or a caesarean and want to safely return to working out.
  • Intimate contact, tampon placement or pelvic health exams feel painful or uncomfortable.
  • You want to prepare your pelvic floor muscles for labour and birth.

If any of these sound familiar, our Abbotsford team will assess what is going on in a private setting and build a clear recovery plan with you.

Book an appointment
Do I need a doctor's referral to see a women’s health physiotherapist?
No, a physician’s referral is not required to book an assessment. Most private insurance plans allow direct booking, though a few specific providers may ask for one for reimbursement. We recommend reviewing your policy or contacting our front desk and we will help you check.
What should I expect during my first women’s health appointment?
Your initial 60-minute visit includes a detailed discussion of your symptoms, medical history and personal goals in a completely private room. Your physiotherapist will then carry out a movement evaluation of your posture, core and hips to build a tailored treatment plan.
Is an internal pelvic floor assessment mandatory?
Not at all. An internal exam is a useful way to assess muscle tone and coordination, but it is entirely optional. We prioritise your comfort and can begin your treatment using external assessment, core exercises and posture guidance.
Can I still attend my treatment session if I am on my period?
Yes. Having your period does not interfere with your session or any treatment techniques. If you would feel more comfortable rescheduling, our team is always happy to accommodate that.
How soon after giving birth can I start physiotherapy?
You can seek early guidance on gentle breathing, posture and light movement within the first few weeks postpartum. For a formal pelvic floor evaluation or abdominal wall assessment (diastasis recti), we generally suggest booking after your six-week medical clearance.
Can women’s health physiotherapy help with pregnancy-related pain?
Yes. Care can safely relieve common pregnancy discomforts including sacroiliac (SI) joint pain, lower back tightness, pubic symphysis pressure and hip strain, helping you stay active and comfortable through every trimester.
Is pelvic floor physiotherapy helpful if I am not pregnant or postpartum?
Definitely. Women’s health physiotherapy treats a broad range of issues unrelated to pregnancy, including chronic pelvic pain, bladder urgency, painful intercourse, tailbone pain and age-related pelvic floor weakness.
What should I wear to my women’s health sessions?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing such as yoga pants, sweatpants or flexible shorts with a comfortable top, so your therapist can easily assess your core, hips and lower body movement.
How many sessions will I need to see improvement?
That depends on your condition, your symptoms and how consistently you can do your home exercise program. Many people notice improvement within three to six visits, and your therapist will give you a clear timeline after your first assessment.
Do you offer direct billing for women’s health physiotherapy?
Yes. We bill directly to most major extended health insurers, as well as ICBC for accident-related claims. Bring your coverage information to your first appointment and our front desk team will handle the paperwork.
